Some Benefits of Turmeric That People Don’t Know

Turmeric known for its bright yellow color and slightly pepper flavor, It is a common ingredient in Indian curries and is what gives yellow mustard its bright color. In addition to being used in food around the world and a popular textile dye, turmeric is also very important in Traditional Chinese and Indian Medicine. Turmeric is actually the root of the Curcuma longa plant and can be used to treat a wide range of illnesses from jaundice and toothaches to bruises, gastrointestinal problems, and chest pain. Here are some of the health benefits you can get from turmeric:

Natural Anti-Inflammatory

Some of the most powerful effects that turmeric has on the body stem from its anti-inflammatory properties. The same oil that gives the bright yellow color to turmeric, known as curcumin, has shown significant anti-inflammatory properties in different studies. Curcumin has been shown to be as powerful as powerful drugs such as hydrocortisone and work just as well as over-the-counter medications like Motrin. What makes turmeric so different, though, is that the oils are naturally occurring and have no toxicity levels.

Treats Bowel Disorders

Curcumin has been linked as a treatment for common inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as ulcerative colitis as well as Crohn’s diseases. In recent studies conducted on laboratory mice, mice that were given diets that were rich in turmeric showed little or no effects of typical colitis signs after being administered an inflammatory that induces colitis. The studies also showed that curcumin is not only safe when taken in small amounts; it is even effective even if the dosage is low.

Treats Rheumatoid Arthritis

Another study was conducted on chemicals found in turmeric that are responsible for its high levels of antioxidants. These antioxidants help destroy free radicals in the human body that are responsible for damaging health cells. In addition to the neutralization of these free radicals, the anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin helped reduce swelling and provide relief for rheumatoid arthritis sufferers.

Mange Cystic Fibrosis

In a study conducted by Yale University, it was discovered that the DeltaF508 mutation of a protein known as CFTR responsible for causing Cystic fibrosis could be corrected with curcumin in laboratory mice. Given curcumin in amounts that would be tolerated by humans once scaled up, the research showed that the mutation of the misfolded protein was corrected because of the levels of calcium released after consuming curcumin.

Prevent Cancer

The high levels of antioxidants present in turmeric that help eliminate free radicals in the body are the same properties that help defend against cancer and prevent cell mutations from taking place. In addition to the prevention of common cancer mutations, recent studies have also shown that curcumin increases liver function and can allow the body to naturally destroy cancer cells.

A study at Jonsh Hopkins University showed that some of the properties of curcumin led to a reduction in lower-bowel polyp size of patients who have a condition known as familial adenomatous polyposis. With over a 60% reduction in the number of polyps created and over 50% reduction in size, curcumin could be responsible for helping prevent colon cancer for those who inherit the genes responsible for FAP.

Prostate cancer has also been shown to stop the growth of prostate cancer cells in laboratory studies, especially when combined with other chemicals such as those found in natural foods like cauliflower. In addition to inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, curcumin has also been linked to a slower rate in the spread of prostate cancer cells that ultimately can lead to the treatment and prevention of prostate cancer.

Lower the risk of Childhood Leukemia

According to recent research, consuming turmeric can help reduce the chance of childhood leukemia—a growing medical concern—in children under the age of 5. By eliminating free radicals and improving liver function, curcumin is able to not only inhibit multiplication of leukemia cells but also prevent certain nitroso and amine compounds from forming. In addition, curcumin can help eliminate some of the carcinogenic chemicals that are created from cigarette smoke from mutating into cancer-causing compounds which greatly reduces the risk of childhood leukemia.

Improve Liver Function

The liver is responsible for helping remove toxins from the body to help prevent the development of disease and illness. In a study conducted on laboratory mice, researchers successfully used chemicals found in turmeric (including curcumin) to catalyze the detoxification of liver enzymes .These detoxification properties can help prevent diseases, cancers, and promote overall natural health by helping the body rid itself of toxins.

Lower Cholesterol

In addition to helping the liver remove harmful toxins from the body, curcumin can also help boost the levels of mNRA in the body that ultimately causes the body to create more LDL receptors. These LDL receptors are necessary because they allow the liver to clear bad cholesterol at a more efficient rate, even up to 700% in some cases compared to cells of a liver that were untreated.

Ultimately as the liver becomes more capable of transporting more LDL cholesterol out of the body, your overall cholesterol levels lower and the ratio of low-to-high cholesterol improves, which can lead to cardiovascular and overall health benefits.

Protection from Alzheimer’s

In 2006 a study was published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry that showed curcumin, the chemical found in turmeric responsible for its bright yellow color, was able to help the body break down a protein fragment known as Amyloid-B. The accumulation of this protein fragment is a primary cause of Alzheimer’s which means curcumin and turmeric can not only add protection to the brain but help prevent Alzheimer’s.

In addition to providing properties that help prevent Alzheimer’s from taking place, by clearing out Amyloid-B proteins, curcumin could be used as more than just a preventative measure but as a treatment in the future as well. In addition to promoting the clearing of this protein, curcumin could reverse the immune defects present in Alzheimer’s patients that lead to the disease’s symptoms.
